Ten Reasons to Say NO MORE to People Pleasing

By Leslie Vernick

Pleasing others has often been seen as a Christian virtue, and it can be, as long as you are free to say no without a guilt trip, a shame attack, or feeling scared or selfish.

Perhaps a better way to describe an unhealthy people-pleaser is a person who is trapped in approval-based relationships.

Here’s what that looks like. You feel compelled to do what other people want, demand, or imply in order to get their approval, acceptance, affection, love or, have some basic safety needs met. Friend, if this rings true for you here me. This is not God’s design for you or for healthy relationships.

Below are ten reasons WHY you should move beyond approval-based, people-pleasing behaviors.

1. You’re depleted and exhausted trying to make everyone happy and doing what they want.

2. You’re seething with resentment. For all you do, you are not appreciated or valued as you want.

3. You are living for someone else’s agenda and missing your own purpose.

4. You are enabling someone else’s dysfunction to grow.

5. You are misusing the talents and abilities that God gave you in order to serve someone else’s purpose, not God’s.

6. You continually allow other people to determine your value, worth and purpose.

7. You have no authentic relationships where there is mutuality and reciprocity. You are the giver; they are the taker.

8. You have lost the person you are supposed to be/become by deforming yourself into who other people want you to be.

9. You do not know who you are, what you want, or what’s important to you.

10. You are disobeying God. (Read Galatians 1:10; Proverbs 29:25; 1 Thessalonians 2:4; Colossians 3:23; Ephesians 6:7 for a few examples).

If you’ve resonated with some or most of these reasons, it’s time for you to make a change.

Don’t continue this unhealthy pattern.

Don’t regret missing the opportunity to become the person God has called you to be because you lived afraid.

Afraid of someone else’s disapproval, anger, or rejection. God wants more for you than to be an object for others to use.

Would I Be a Fool to Reconcile?

By Leslie Vernick

Question: I discovered my husband’s 8-month affair 1 1/2 years ago. We separated for 3 months and then I took him back to work on things. I even told him I forgave him. He continued to lie to me. Then 3 1/3 months ago I discovered he betrayed me again a few more times with the same woman 6 months prior while we were trying to rebuild and take all the affair recovery courses.

We separated again and this time I wasn’t codependent. I didn’t tell him what he should do. I left it totally up to him, but he’s done nothing and in his weak moments, he has even approached his affair partner for conversation. I recently told him this is the end of the line for me. He told me he wanted to reconcile, and he gave me a genuine apology and he passed a polygraph that I asked for a long time ago, but he was unwilling to do so because he hadn’t come clean to me about all the lies yet.

Would I be a fool to consider possible reconciliation and rebuilding our marriage after all this? We’ve been married 33 years and have two grown (recently) married children. Thanvks so much.

Answer: I’m sorry you have been so deceived for so long. Your question, “Would you be a fool to consider reconciliation with a man who has repeatedly cheated, lied, and pretended during a “reconciliation” time?” From what you’ve said he’s not done any work around this. Now he passes a polygraph test and gives you seemingly a sincere apology and you’re wondering if this is a good sign to reconcile the relationship.

Only you can answer that question. But let me give you some things to consider. When you told him he was free to do what he wanted to do, he did go for help?

What People Are Saying About Leslie’s Moving Beyond People Pleasing Course:

Taking this class helped me to gain clarity and then start to unpack the lies so I could make room for truth which is bringing me freedom and finally being empowered to lay these sins and baggage down at the cross! I’m finally learning to do my own work and become Responsible for myself! The R step in CORE! Before, I was frantically “working” but getting more burdened and not being freed, but rather in further bondage. I am so thankful and growing so much!
